For 2010, the following themes are expected to become popular:

Popular costumes include the "Pretty Playing Card", "Sexy Mad Hatter", "Adorable Alice" or "Sexy Queen of Hearts" for the ladies, and "Tweedle Dee", "Tweedle Dum", the "Mad Hatter", and the "Royal King" for men.http://www.costumekingdom.com/search.aspx?sections=,660
- Pop celebrities: Lady Gaga with her extravagant dress-code and Michael Jackson remain very popular choices.
- Circus/Clown/Acrobat: Circus artists are a popular costume choice, as they often have very distinct, recognizable outfits, that are still easy to create and wear.
- Moulin Rouge: Especially for the ladies, the can-can dancers' costumes are a bit on the naughty side, but are very popular (partly because of that)
- Cops 'n Robbers: A sexy cop outfit for her, and a criminal black-white striped outfit, complete with large black chained ball for him make the perfect couple's outfit.
- '70s/'80s disco outfits, including large wigs, bell-bottomed glitter trousers, and elvis-style jacket complete this popular outfit. Other costumes are a Pink top with leather trousers or poodle skirt for the girls, and T-Bird style leather outfits for the guys, complete with wig.http://www.costumekingdom.com/search.aspx?searchterm=Grease

History
Dressing up for special occasions like Halloween has a long history. Masquerade parties were already organized in the 19th century in the US. These parties became popular in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, and they especially flourished in Venice, Italy. When Europeans migrated to the United States, they brought this tradition with them. Dressing up in Halloween costumes is a recent tradition that developed in the twentieth century. The first store bought Halloween costumes were not available before the 1930's.
